Speaking Consultant, 2019-2020 - Academic Resource Center - Work Study or Non-Work Study

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Tufts University is now accepting applications from graduate students (in any discipline) in the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts to serve as Speaking Consultants for the next academic year. 

Consultants are expected to do the following:
  • work one-on-one with undergraduate and graduate students (domestic and multilingual/international) on a variety of academic speaking assignments to enhance students’ public speaking & presentation skills as well as support them work through presentation anxiety
  • prepare and conduct general presentation skills workshops to support faculty and student groups upon request
  • serve as cultural and linguistic informants for multilingual/international graduate students by
  1. working one-on-one with students to enhance their oral communication skills in English and/or
  2. leading one or more conversational fluency workshops, and/or
  3. supporting an oral communications class as requested by the English for Academic Purposes program director
  • write detailed reports of individual or group sessions
  • promote the program as needed

Consultants are responsible and professional members of the ARC team. Applicants must:
  • have strong communication skills in a public, interpersonal, and group communication environments have successfully completed a Public Speaking course or have equivalent training or experience
  • be sensitive to a diverse student population, representing the full spectrum of cultural, political, socio-economic and religious backgrounds and practice the appreciation of cultural differences
  • feel comfortable working with multilingual/international students and have experience teaching, tutoring, or helping non-native speakers of English with their speaking/conversational skills
  • be committed to working as a consultant for at least two consecutive semesters
  • have a keen attention to detail and a collaborative work style

Pay: $20/hour to start, with opportunities for advancement after the first year.
 
Training and Meetings: Mandatory training is compensated (initial training will take place on August 26-28). Hired consultants are also expected to attend staff meetings throughout the year as needed.
