Data Analyst Intern, Inspector General's Bureau of Program Integrity & Policy & Government Divsions

The Office of the Inspector General (Office) seeks a Data Analyst Intern to support two divisions of the Office in fulfilling its mission to promote good government and prevent fraud, waste and abuse. A successful candidate will be able to perform data analysis, create data visualizations and present findings to team members. Working in a collaborative and inclusive environment, the candidate should expect to work in a small team with a hands-on approach. The OFFICE is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their work and service, to the diversity and excellence of its work and community. The candidate must be available to work approximately 20 hours per week, on a schedule designed around classes and other academic responsibilities. All hours worked must be completed at our Office in downtown Boston during regular work hours.

Throughout the Data Analyst Intern’s time with the OFFICE, the individual will get exposure to a wide-range of projects and topic areas. Within the Policy and Government Division, the Data Analyst Intern will work closely with data related to the Massachusetts Medicaid and Health Safety Net Programs. Within the Bureau of Program Integrity, the Data Analyst Intern will focus on analysis of public benefits programs. For both divisions, the intern will conduct research and review data systems to build context for analyses. The intern will also have opportunities to brainstorm with other analysts and propose new projects based on trends and anomalies in data sets.   

Duties Include:

  • Identifying and collecting primary data.
  • Assessing the quality of primary data.
  • Testing and validating outputs and analyses of colleagues.
  • Converting and formatting data.
  • Conducting research of relevant statutes and regulations, policies, programs and business practices, to develop a contextual understanding of the data. 
  • Performing analyses of quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Interpreting data and producing clear visual data summaries, written analyses, reports, graphics, tables and presentations.
  • Organizing qualitative information in a manner that facilitates its use for policy analysis.
  • Developing and maintaining project databases and spreadsheets.
  • Working with public and private data sources from a wide range of data providers and in multiple formats.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with Excel, R or Python, SQL, ArcGIS, ESRI, or other relevant software.
  • Experience working with and analyzing large data sets using analytic software packages.
  • Experience manipulating and cleaning data.
  • Experience presenting data and information in a user-friendly manner to inform conclusions and recommendations.
  • Experience applying analytical tools and models, programming database queries, analyzing data, and creating reports.
  • Familiarity with statistical and analytical methods and tools that support research and assessment.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical and research skills.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Interest in public service and good government.
  • Ongoing commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Located within commuting distance of our Office in downtown Boston, with availability during regular work hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with and analyzing large data sets using analytic software packages.
  • Demonstrated experience with visual analysis tools.

Salary Range:
$18 - $22 per hour
