Oncology Drug Discovery, Biochemistry Internship

Job Description:
10-12 week paid internship

General Summary:
Individual will be responsible for working with scientists in the drug discovery group, contributing to
biochemical assays including enzyme kinetics as well as understanding the MOA of lead drug candidates
of some of the key projects. The successful internship candidate will be trained to independently perform
experiments using variety of biochemical techniques utilizing recombinant proteins/enzymes.
This position is for an undergraduate biochemistry major looking to gain laboratory experience in an
industrial setting. As a member of the Discovery Chemistry team, he/she will contribute to the synthesis
of a unique compound library.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
 Independently execute experiments in the lab with minimal supervision.
 Analyze and interpret data using scientific analysis and statistical software.
 Provide support to other studies driven by in vivo and pharmacology scientists.
 Summarize and present findings to the research department meetings.
 Maintain detailed records of all experiments in a laboratory notebook.
 Explore activity and mechanism of drug combinations in preclinical cancer models
 Familiarity with basic biology techniques to characterize drug combination activity (e.g. mammalian
cell culture, immunoblot, protein/RNA/DNA extraction, PCR) preferred
 Communicate research results to supervisor in an accurate and timely manner.
 Participate in research group and project meetings
 Maintain high standards of laboratory safety in compliance with the H3 safety manual
Job Qualifications:
 Completed lab-based coursework in chemistry, molecular biology, and biochemistry
 Undergraduate chemistry major with a strong academic record.
 Must have completed two semesters of organic chemistry including laboratory coursework.
 Preference given to candidates who have performed independent undergraduate research as well.
 Familiar with standard analytical techniques (NMR, TLC, HPLC, mass spectroscopy)
 Excellent communication skills, work ethic, and organizational skills
 Experience with ChemDraw, Powerpoint and Excel preferred
 Strong desire to learn more about drug discovery and cancer biology
