Clinical Research Internship

The Site:
Beginnings Child Development Center is a private day school for children three months through six years old. The school provides resources including specialized faculty and curriculum, and it is grounded in relevant research about emotional development within the first six years of life—starting at birth. A major focus is within the first three years of life. Our mission is to facilitate the growth of healthy emotional development, self-regulation, and critical thinking skills for learning and cognition. We promote the early development of emotional skills to help lay the foundation for self-regulation—essential for academic and social success.

The Study:
In September 2016, BCDC started a new phase of research focusing on the development of emotion regulation and self-regulation and the affective capacities involved in solving interpersonal problems. This study is exploring how our unique curriculum impacts the natural emotional communication of children with peers and adults in the classroom and at home. Data has been collected through administered measures, observation, and video recordings. We expect our pilot study, with papers forthcoming, will further support research on teaching methods in an early education setting.

Internship Responsibilities (depending on availability):
•Administer different measures that assess children’s level of emotional knowledge, self-regulation and executive functioning skills
•Support the development of video and digital media projects relating to Beginnings educational and training materials

•Write and edit material for teaching manual and academic articles
•Perform other duties as assigned by PI and research coordinator
