The Mongan Institute in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking an administrative director to advance the next phase of a vibrant research Institute at MGH conducting population and health care delivery team science dedicated to improving the lives of people with complex health needs and achieving health equity. The Mongan institute consists over 130 faculty as well as research fellows, trainees, and a large staff including 13 research centers spanning population data science to health care delivery team science (see https://www.monganinstitute.org). In addition to conducting state-of-the-art population and health care delivery research, the Mongan Institute provides research training and mentoring programs and includes core and affiliate faculty members within the Department of Medicine, as well as numerous clinical departments across MGH. Having developed the foundation of the Institute over the past 3 years, the position of Administrative Director will work closely with the Mongan Institute Director and the leadership and the staff of Mongan’s centers and programs to advance the next phase of our mission and development.
This position will work closely with the Director of the Institute in setting administrative direction and will oversee execution of the Institute’s strategic priorities and programs. In addition to administrative leadership and strategic management support, this position will oversee the Institute’s overall budget and financial operations, policies, procedures, and systems, including facilitating staff recruitment and resource development. This position will also oversee our communication program aimed at enhancing our national and international recognition as a leader in population and health care delivery research and training, and will work with the Director to advance the development and launch of an exciting research education and training initiative in health care delivery science. 
The position of Administrative Director requires excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism, and creativity, as well as a keen analytic skill set and strong communication, planning, networking, budget and finance management, and operations skills. 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Working closely with the Director of the Mongan Institute, the AD will manage and assist with implementing all strategic planning efforts.
  • Assesses staffing needs and help to facilitate appropriate infrastructure that maximizes productivity and success across the Institute.
  • Provides financial planning and oversight of the Mongan Institute budget working closely with DOM Vice President and DOM Finance Director. 
  • Provides leadership in matters related to human resources, grants management staffing, budget development, financial support and recruitments. Facilitates problem resolution for grants management, personnel management, and facilities issues as needed.
  • Provides supervision and oversight of Mongan’s pre- and post-award management team to optimize efficiency, effectiveness, operations, and staffing. Facilitates grants management coverage across all units as needed including assigning emergency backup for grant proposals as needed.
  • Works closely with the Development Office on philanthropic activities. Sets strategic priorities and prepares business plans, materials, letters and other information highlighting and promoting the division.
  • Oversees Mongan Institute staff in our communication efforts, including the Mongan Institute website, Mongan Institute Weekly Updates and the Mongan Institute Monthly newsletter, and Mongan Institute Annual Report, as well as creating and implementing new ways of promoting the Institute’s communications strategy and brand.
  • Manages faculty affairs for the Institute including facilitating credentialing, promotion, career advancement, career conferences, funding opportunity education, and other faculty advancement efforts are coordinated appropriately. Implements new programs with the Director.
  • Participates in ongoing Research and management committees both at MGH and at Mass General Brigham as necessary.

  • Supports and facilitates the development of a new education and training initiative in health care delivery science, as well as facilitates cross-MGH and cross-MGB collaborative initiatives.
  • Participates in department, hospital, or MGB administrative leadership meetings and task forces representing the department and research community.
  • Leads and manages regular administrative meetings with staff and/or with Director as needed. Develops and manages a strong team dynamic across the Mongan Institute Administration.
  • Provides supervision for 3-4 FTEs direct reports within the Mongan Institute Director’s Office.
 
 
  • Masters degree (or PhD) in Business, Public Health, Health Administration, or Education.
  • 5 to 7 years of administrative experience and supervisory experience required.
  • Experience in research administration and research training & education administration desirable.
