About the Position:
Under the direction and supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer, the Transportation Engineer performs activities requiring engineering knowledge and management skills for the preparation of plans, specifications, estimates, written documents, presentations, and other related work for transportation projects. The incumbent is responsible for making engineering decisions on a daily basis necessary to solve complex engineering issues. Must be able to effectively analyze a wide variety of engineering issues and develop practical solutions. Must have the experience to perform the duties described above and be capable of quickly learning how to do so. Incumbent may be assigned by the Supervisor to be a Lead-worker to train, direct, and manage the work of other staff within assigned branch. As incumbent progresses in experience, assignments will increase from average to high difficulty.
What You'll Do:
- Assists in the preparation of utility base maps and conflict mapping, utility relocation quantities and estimates, utility policy certifications, utility database support, including studies and investigations associated with obtaining utility policy certification necessary for the delivery of all projects.
- Prepares written correspondence and reports.
- Coordinates potholing and underground utility location field marking. Processes longitudinal encroachment exceptions in accordance with the Manual for Encroachment Permits on California Highways and processes utility policy exceptions in accordance with the Project Development Procedures Manual.
- Researches information related to the project assignment through various records including, as-built drawings, photo log, various reports, and manuals.
- Collects and records field data relevant to the assigned projects.
- Assists in the preparation of plans, specifications, estimates, project initiation reports, and project reports for various types of transportation facilities including but not limited to freeway, expressway and conventional highways.
- Includes evaluating project design details, checking R/W maps, calculating quantities, and preparing various construction details.
- Performs Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and manual delineation. Uses current department drafting guidelines and standards for design.
