The Arts Administration (ARAD) graduate program at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking an entrepreneurially-minded, motivated Internship Coordinator to take its Internship Program to the next level of excellence. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Internship Coordinator is responsible for the design and implementation of the required internship for the M.A. degree, which includes developing and leading a semester-long series of professional development workshops for students in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

In addition s/he advises students on areas of individual interest, as well as navigating the application process, registration, and through the internship experience. S/he also creates and maintains systems to track and evaluate program effectiveness. The Internship Coordinator is responsible for advocating for the students’ professional growth – in line with Department of Labor guidelines – and ensuring the applicability of the field experience to ARAD academics. While the program does not place students in internships, the Internship Coordinator develops and maintains ongoing communication with organizations and alumni to facilitate potential opportunities, including through an annual arts administration internship fair. Internship Coordinator Responsibilities include: Internship Program

•           Facilitate student visa paperwork with regard to paid internships and employment

•           Develop and lead a semester-long series of professional development workshops that support program objectives and student needs

•           Collaborate with students to strategize internship placements and career pursuits

•           Advise students in developing strong internship/job application materials (resume, cover letter, etc.) and guide them through the interview process

•           Facilitate the internship registration process

•           Monitor internships through established tracking systems

•           Manage the internship database

•           Site visits with students and host organizations

•           Organize an annual Arts Administration Internship Fair

•           Create and maintain internship program evaluation systems

•           Weekly communications with students regarding current internship/job opportunities

•           Other projects as assigned

Relationship Building

•           Under the guidance of faculty and staff, develop a robust pipeline of internship and programmatic opportunities with targeted arts organizations

•           Be an active member in the art internship community, attend related events, etc.

•           Build relationships with Career Services and collaborate with Career Services when appropriate in programming

Minimum Qualifications

•           Excellent written and oral communication skills

•           Excellent organizational skills

•           Familiarity with NYC and regional, national and international cultural institutions

•           Entrepreneurial outlook and desire to continuously improve the internship program experience

•           Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel), Outlook, Web and graphic design

Preferred Qualifications

•           Knowledge of higher education environment

•           Knowledge of international student visa issues

•           Network of contacts at NYC and regional cultural institutions

•           MA in Arts Administration, Art History, Fine Arts, or other arts-related degree

•           Experience developing professional development programs

The Arts Administration (ARAD) graduate program at Teachers College, Columbia University offers a Masters in Arts Administration encompassing the visual and performing arts. It is a comprehensive, two-year, 60-credit program informed by both research and professional practice. Through a highly selective and holistic review process, ARAD only accepts 30 applicants each year, bringing together students from across art traditions and sectors, backgrounds, and geographies who are training for careers in for- and non-profit organizations and across areas including management, advocacy/policy, assessment, development, entrepreneurship, education and marketing both in the U.S. and abroad.
