Don’t be afraid to ask questions- you’ll have a ton of them. Just make sure you make a list of questions and ask all at once instead of asking every 5 minutes

Program Management Offie Intern

July 2020 • Hermitage, TN

What I liked

I was grateful for the opportunity to still have an internship considering the COVID-19 circumstances. I liked the opportunity to have one-on-one virtual coffee chats with professionals as well as virtual training in different platforms.

What I wish was different

I wish the experience could have been in person.

Advice

Take advantage of opportunities to connect with upper management, as it might not be as easy once working full-time. Everyone is there to help you grow and happy to connect to answer any questions and give advice.

Audit and Assurance Intern

June - July 2021 • Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to work with my engagement team and the different auditing programs that are used for audit planning, risk assessment & materiality, and to document workpapers. I got an in-depth view of what auditing is like outside of the classroom through hands-on experience through this internship.

What I wish was different

One thing I do wish was different was the length of the internship as well as the timing. I was an audit and assurance intern over the summer months which means that many clients at this stage are in the planning stages where there might not be much work. The timing of the internship would be more beneficial if it were to shift one month over from July to August where many clients are in quarterly reviews.

Advice

Try to absorb as much information as you can and definitely ask many questions no matter how small or big they are.

Advice

Don't be afraid to tell your managers if there is something about the experience you don't like. Either they can change it and make it better, or you learn that you don't match with the conditions in that position. No matter what you learn how they handle push-back.

Business Analyst Intern

June - September 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked the company culture, the people I worked with, and the variety of projects available.

What I wish was different

It seems to be very work-heavy, making it hard to perfect your personal work-life balance.

Advice

I would suggest networking with as many people as possible so that you can come out of it with lots of friends to reach out to post-internship.

Summer Solution Scholar

June - August 2022 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

Very reasonable work-life balance, work from home, great support from recruiters

What I wish was different

After being handed over to my assigned project, the project team dropped the ball and just passed me from supervisor to supervisor because they weren't sure what to do with an intern. This resulted me in getting paid to do nothing for over 80% of the 10 week internship.

Advice

After chatting with my fellow interns, not everyone had experience like mine, so it seems like luck plays a big part of how your experience will turn out.

Discovery Tax Intern

June - July 2022 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

My internship didn't expect me to know a lot about accounting/taxes and took that into account, I didn't do any client work but I was able to shadow people in the office (sitting in on team meetings, meetings with clients, and watching preparation of workpapers) with staff, seniors, managers, and partners. I was able to go to the office as much or as little as I wanted, it was very flexible on working from home or in the office.

What I wish was different

I was the only person doing my internship in my office since I was based in one of the firm's smaller offices. My internship was meant to be done fully virtually, or at least that you could do everything for the internship without ever coming in to the office, although I was still able to come in to the office whenever I wanted. I just wish the internship had been more involved with people or other interns from the office I was based in, rather than a national/regional organization.

Advice

Its an absolutely great experience. Go to the office as much as you can, it makes the experience a lot better when you get to meet people in person in the office, whether its at the snack drawer, coffee machine, or if you try to schedule coffee runs or lunches with people in the office. Being around people gave me a much better experience. Also, take initiative and ask people to be able to shadow them, email people you've met and see if they'll let you sit in on any of their meetings with their teams or clients, or if you can watch someone doing workpapers. Most people won't mind and will send you a bunch of invites for meetings, or they will reach out to other people who may have things for you to shadow.

Summer Scholar

June - August 2021 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

With the project I was on, I had a lot of opportunity to try tasks I was interested in. Additionally, I felt as though I was working on real assignments that had some type of impact on the project. Everyone I worked with or talked to were very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. It wasn't extremely stressful for me, so it was a "get what you give" kind of experience.

What I wish was different

Learning about other areas of work other than the project you are assigned to is totally up to your own initiative. There are plenty of opportunities to talk to individuals in other areas of work or attend seminars/panels for a specific area of work, but you won't actually get to work on them. You are confined to a project, just like a full time employee would be.

Advice

There are a ton of opportunities at Deloitte, whether or not you get to experience them is up to you. Take initiative to talk to anyone who does something that is interesting to you, that is how you make contacts, network, and traverse your way around a company this big.
