Liberty Mutual Insurance

Insurance Claims Intern

June - August 2020 • Plano, TX

What I liked

I really enjoyed learning about insurance and about Liberty Mutual as a whole. As an accounting major, I wasn't too familiar with insurance but during my time at Liberty I was able to learn a lot! I was also able to learn about the culture at Liberty. Liberty Mutual really puts their employees first, they have a great amount of diversity, and have several career opportunities within the firm that I was not aware about until now. The firm is overall a great place for anyone to start a career at!

What I wish was different

I would've liked to have experienced this internship in person, which is no one's fault due to the global pandemic. The reason I say I would've liked to experience the internship in person is because I would have been able to have had more in person interaction and experience the overall lifestyle of working in a corporate position.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is working during a global pandemic or a virtual internship would be to create a routine to stay on track. Working from home is something I have never done especially as a full time intern, so in order for me to stay engaged I had to create a routine that was easy to follow while working from home.

Field Sales Intern

May - August 2020 • Fairfield, OH

What I liked

I appreciated that I was trusted with a lot of autonomy to complete my work and sell like a full-time rep would. This helped me to gain time management skills that will help me to effectively achieve my sales goals in my future career. Also, I liked the exposure to lead sources and the ability to develop relationships with my assigned rep's business partners.

What I wish was different

One thing that I wish could have been different would have been to be in-person and not virtual as a result of corona virus. Obviously this was out of the control of local management but it would have improved the experience.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be to take note of each sales rep's approach to selling because you can learn at least one thing from every rep that you can apply to your strategy.

Salesforce

June - August 2020 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

Did not cancel the internship during global pandemic Internship consisted of meaningful tasks Accommodating to the interns Provided work laptops Offered interns choice to still relocate and give them that stipend Still had internship programming (hackathon, online socials) Team was nice Manager was understandable

What I wish was different

Wished there was more interactivity with team Didn't have training laid out well Wasn't initially aware of what I was supposed to be doing Role didn't fit my interests but was a good learning experience Assigned mentor was not communicative Internship cohort was not my ideal fit Did not get to work with other interns, but that was because of my role

Advice

This internship is definitely more developer and technical focused than business focused so the roles in which an Informatics major can effectively transfer their skills are limited if they don't have a lot of experience programming Definitely take initiative in the internship, the people were very open to listening to interns Take advantage of the learning opportunities

Procurement Intern

January - June 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

My team was my favorite part of my job. I felt welcomed on the first day and brought onto project teams right away. I owned projects, and felt like I was part of the team and never felt like I was less than anyone else because I was an intern. I liked the ability to own my projects, and have freedom with the projects. I feel like it really prepared me for being in a team after graduation.

What I wish was different

There is a HUGE emphasis on the intern programs. There are designed protocols and procedures for converting summer interns into Full-time employees, or even getting them into an HR Development program. This is not the case for co-ops. There was no process to help me convert since I had one full-year left of school. I was not considered an intern when applying for the HRDP program and was compared to people who didn't intern within Talent and Enterprise Services. It was kind of sad that after leaving, I returned to the Boston HQ for an interview to return for the program. After that completed, the recruiter forgot to call me to let me know that they had chosen another applicant, and they never went to past management to gauge how I was as a worker.

Advice

Try, and really try, anything. I had no idea that I would feel so passionately about analysis work as I did until I acted as an Analyst at Liberty. I learned so much that will be incredibly useful working for any and every company throughout my career.

Inside sales intern

May 2019 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

This was an amazing experience. Not only did I have the opportunity to get licensed in personal lines insurance, learn the ins and outs of a big corporation, and get into the swing of what it’s like to have a full time, 9-5 job, this company also took my peers and I on a trip to Boston to visit their headquarters. I accepted a job offer from them and will be starting January 6th. I am currently working part time selling insurance with them until I graduate from ASU which is great as well because I’m actively using the skills I’ve learned in the internship to better prepare me for the transition to full time.

What I wish was different

There isn’t much I would change at all, my supervisor Brandon Holman was wonderful and the whole experience all together was life changing.

Advice

If Liberty Mutual expresses interest in you, take the opportunity you won’t regret it. This is an amazing company with so many benefits and resources. Also Handshake has been by far the best means to find new career opportunities

Software Developer Intern

June 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed working at Liberty Mutual Insurance (LMI) because of the laid back environment it provided. After talking to each employee I met I always heard that their favorite part of working at LMI was the work life balance. I enjoyed working on my own project that I was able to decide what I thought was the best plan of action to achieve the desired goal.

What I wish was different

Although having my own project was a great experience giving me a lot of freedom, it would have been nice to work directly on the team for a small portion. Working directly on the team can give you a closer experience of what it is like to work at a place full-time and get a better idea of if you want to go back. Luckily for me I was offered part time work during the school year and have been able to add working on the team as part of my experience.

Advice

If you are able to Intern at Liberty Mutual make sure to take advantage of all of the intern events and get to know the people who you are interning with. Also make sure to talk to other people who work at the company to hear about their experiences to help shape your idea of what the company is like.

What I liked

We did challenging projects that were actually used by our teams. Each intern had a very specific project so there was a wide variety of things to work on. The culture was my favorite part overall because it was very welcoming and an encouraging place to learn.

What I wish was different

My personal team was not as collaborative as some of the others, but that was just the project I was assigned to.

Advice

Definitely take the opportunity to show leadership in learning skills and solving problems.
