Liberty Mutual Insurance

Software Developer Intern

May 2018 • Exeter, NH

What I liked

I felt like I was contributing to the team's momentum, just like any other member. My boss really tried to make sure I was doing well and that I had everything I needed. In general, Liberty has great benefits and a flexible schedule-- They're good to their employees.

What I wish was different

Work from home would have been nice on the weekends when most of my team worked from home. But I understand that there are some restrictive laws for New Hampshire that make it difficult for hourly employees to do this.

Advice

In the first couple days, you wont have much to do until you get set-up with all the needed permissions. Take this as an opportunity to research the technologies your team uses, any team documentation or source code, and generally what you will be doing for the summer. You get out of this sort of company what you put in. If you find that there's not enough work, ask your boss/team for more opportunities, or make your own opportunities by starting a project with other interns and the recruiting office.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2018 • Keene, NH

What I liked

I was working along side many experience Actuaries, so I was able to learn a huge amount about the field and the experiences in the profession from them.

What I wish was different

I wish I wasn't the only intern in my office, or at least not the only person in their early 20's.

Advice

Talk to as many people as possible in your office to learn about their experiences. This goes for both their career path, and their experiences with Liberty in general.

What I liked

I learned a lot of different skills such as excel, creating PowerPoints, reading excel documents, learning more about the insurance industry, doing my own research and data analyzing.

What I wish was different

I wish we were given a stipend for housing over the summer like the IT interns had.

Advice

It was (still is) a great opportunity. Definitely apply even if you aren’t in Paul College, because I am in COLA and got an offer for the summer and to stay!

What I liked

Great people, interns connected fairly easily

What I wish was different

less company publicity and more engagement. Every event felt like a sales pitch as to why Liberty

Advice

Network. Liberty isn't the most exciting place to work but the people are fantastic. All you have to do is reach out and everyone will be more than receptive

Application Developer Intern

June - August 2017 • Portsmouth, NH

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to write production code for a from-scratch project, as opposed to modifying or refactoring code for an existing projects (which is how a lot of developer co-ops are). I worked on the consumer mobile app rebuild project, which was really nice because I knew a lot of real users will someday be using the work I did. Liberty also invests a lot into making quality experiences for interns with events, lunches, networking opportunities, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more interns on my team. Each team had 1-2 interns so it was tough to interact with my peers except at company-sanctioned intern events.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to the other interns who sit in your office, even if you don't see them regularly. Having a level of support from your peers is important.

What I wish was different

I wish interns had more choice in projects.

Advice

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I got the opportunity to work with my team on a real project to be actually used by the business, as opposed to a made up “intern” project. I could also tell that my manager valued my input, and that without the work I did this summer the project I was on could not have been completed.
